Anatolia - Hittite Empire
The Hittites were a Bronze Age people from the region of Anatolia (located in what is now Turkey and Syria).
Garstang initially visited this area in 1904 and planned to excavate a site near Boghaz-Keui (Boğazkale, Turkey, later discovered to be the site of the Hittite capital Hattusas). But when Garstang returned with a team in 1907, his excavation permit had been transferred to German archaeologist Hugo Winckler.
Garstang and his team undertook an exploratory journey to identify another excavation site, with the assistance of local guides. This resulted in over 600 images documenting the landscape, peoples, and inscriptions of the region, which formed the basis of the Institute of Archaeology’s lantern slide collection.
