- Description
- A red-shouldered hawk is shown attacking a group of eighteen bobwhite partridges, a mix of male and female adults plus young. The oil painting is a copy of Audubon's original watercolour c.1825, which is published as plate 95 in his book, The Birds of America. It is considered one of the most ambitious and dramatic of Audubon's compositions. He said of it: "The different attitudes exhibited by the [partridges] cannot fail to give you a lively idea of the terror and confusion which prevail on such occasions".
