- Description
- An otter with its leg caught in a hunter's metal trap. Blood drips from the animal's mouth as it attempts to chew its own paw off in an effort to escape. Audubon had been painting otters since 1812 and said that the Canadian otter was his favourite subject. In his journal Audubon described this unfortunate creature as an "amiable otter" but its recipient, Mrs Hannah Mary Rathbone, loathed the painting. Her son later wrote that they kept it until she "could no longer bear the horror of it".
